EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - An East Cleveland Police Department officer was shot late Thursday night, the mayor confirmed.

The shooting happened in the 1900 block of North Taylor Road just after 11 p.m. on Aug. 7.

East Cleveland Mayor Lateek Shabazz told 19 News on scene that the officer was taken to University Hospitals.

Shabazz said he went to the hospital himself, and believes the officer will be “okay.”

This shooting of an East Cleveland police officer comes just two weeks after the three Lorain police officers were shot in an ambush.

The officer was stuck after East Cleveland Police responded to a shooting, according to the mayor.

Police are still searching for the suspected gunman, the mayor said.

Two drones are in the air as the search continues, 19 News learned on scene.
