A sea of lanterns shined hope over Green Lake at sunset. Families, young and old, made their way to the dock and released 1,000 lanterns into the water, many with a message of “dream,” “peace” or “hope” written in Japanese calligraphy.

“From Hiroshima to Hope” is an annual commemoration of the 1945 U.S. bombings of Hiroshima on Aug. 6 and Nagasaki on Aug. 9. This year, on the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima in the last days of World War II, Norimitsu Tosu, a Hiroshima survivor, spoke to the Seattle crowd about keeping the memory of the atomic bombs alive.
