NEWTON, Mass. —

Police who responded to a report of "over 100 cars" street racing, driving erratically and doing burnouts in Newton Centre said they were able to stop and cite some of the drivers.

According to a statement , officers responded to multiple calls from Newton Center just after midnight on Sunday. While the department said that some of the drivers were cited, many others fled the area.

"Although this does not happen often in our area, this driving behavior is dangerous," police said.

Newton Police thanked the neighbors who reported the incident and encouraged others to report suspicious activity to dispatchers at 617-796-2123 and emergencies to 911.
