GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is warning food truck operators they’re being targeted by a scam.

Vendors are invited to participate in “fan events” and are asked to pay a vendor fee. The scammers request payment through peer-to-peer banking apps like Venmo, PayPal, Cash App and Zelle.

Food truck operators discover the fan event never existed, and their money is difficult or impossible to recover.

Scammers seem to be taking advantage of the start of the football season, but the scam isn’t exclusive to sporting events, the DATCP says.

The scammers are using numerous Gmail accounts to help get around spam filters.

State consumer officials advice food vendors to protect themselves.
