A false alarm prompted a large law enforcement presence Friday morning at charter school in Lexington.

According to the Lexington Police Department (LPD), officers responded to American Leadership Academy Lexington K-5 and American Leadership Academy Lexington 6-12 due to an alarm of an intruder on campus.

As a precaution both schools were immediately put on lockdown to ensure student and staff safety, and teams of officers conducted a search classroom by classroom.

The LPD later said that the intruder alarm was determined to be false and that the alarm malfunction may have been connected to a previous fire alarm drill earlier in the morning.

School instruction resumed and officers began leaving the school around 10:30 a.m.
