Two people were seriously injured after a car collided with a garbage truck in East Providence, Rhode Island, Friday morning.

East Providence police tell NBC10 Boston affiliate WJAR that officers responded around 5:30 a.m. to the crash in the area of Mink Street and Wampanoag Trail where they found a sedan had rear-ended a Mega Disposal trash truck that was stopped at a traffic light.

The female passenger was freed from the car by first responders using the jaws of life, bystanders tell WJAR. She was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries, as was the person driving the car she was in, police said.

There was no immediate word on what caused the crash. Police tell WJAR that charges may be forthcoming
