CHRISTIANA, Tenn. (WSMV) - The Tennessee Highway Patrol continues to investigate a deadly crash involving a pedestrian in Rutherford County.

The THP’s investigation, thus far, shows that at around 5:30 a.m., 86-year-old Jerry Smotherman pulled over to help with a vehicle crash that had just occurred on Shelbyville Pike, near Christiana Road.

As Smotherman was walking across the highway, he was struck by a Chevy Malibu traveling south. Smotherman died from the injuries he sustained during the collision.

The 37-year-old driver of the Malibu pulled over onto the shoulder following the incident. He was unharmed, according to THP’s report.

No charges are pending against the driver.
