FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - The Central Unified School District is gearing up for the first day of school next week. Parents and students can expect new safety features in front of Herndon-Barstow Elementary in Fresno.
The "High Intensity Activated Crosswalk," or "HAWK," crosswalk system aims to keep kids safe on their way to class.
"Once that pedestrian pushes the button to cross, it'll turn on the red lights to let motorists know you need to come to a stop, allow people to safely get to the other side, and then the cars can continue through the traffic," Fresno County Sheriff's Public Information Officer Tony Botti said.
Botti said the features from the HAWK give drivers a clear view of students. The crosswalk is expected to be complete after the school year begins.
