FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – In 2026, California Governor Gavin Newsom's Administration will close its 5th prison since he took office in 2019, according to a release by the California Department of Corrections.

CDCR says the affected facility is the California Rehabilitation Center in Norco, located in Riverside County, and their rep confirmed to us, the closure is mainly to help the state with its multi-billion-dollar deficit.

However, law enforcement leaders from around the state's San Joaquin Valley say no matter the savings, it's not worth the cost of public safety.

"If this continues, we are going to find California in worse shape than it is now, because I don't think that most people that live here feel safe," Fresno County Lisa Smittcamp told YourCentralValley.com in resp
