BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - A new North Dakota law legalizes the direct-to-consumer sale of raw milk products. It gained national attention and took effect on Aug. 1.

Producers can now sell these products directly to consumers for personal use.

The products can’t be sold to wholesalers, retail stores or donated.

Products must be labeled as “made with raw milk,” and can only be sold within the state.

The FDA and CDC advise against consumption due to risks of pathogens such as E. Coli, Listeria and Salmonella.

Representative Dawson Holle, who is a dairy farmer and introduced the legislation, said he’s heard from fellow dairy farmers who say the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.
