NEW JERSEY (PIX11) -- New Jersey mom Jessica Jarner is on a mission to educate beachgoers about the dangers of the ocean. Her son, Sam, became paralyzed in a freak accident while lifeguarding six years ago in Ocean Grove.

Jarmer was on duty when he dove over a wave, hitting a sandbar and breaking his neck. He was paralyzed from the chest down.

“I was very confident in swimming,” said Sam. “I was on a swim team. I grew up on that ocean, swimming longer than I can remember. I surfed my whole life, surfed 13-foot waves.”

Jessica believes that if an accident such as this could happen to her son, it could happen to anybody. She came up with the idea to educate other beachgoers with QR-coded signs.
