WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — On Friday, convictions were overturned and charges were dismissed for the "Winston-Salem Five," a group of teen boys who were convicted in the 2002 murder of Nathaniel Jones — the grandfather of NBA star Chris Paul, according to the attorney for two of the men convicted.
Jones was found beaten to death in the carport of his Winston-Salem home in November 2002, one day after a then-17-year-old Paul committed to play basketball at Wake Forest University.
Over the course of their investigation, Winston-Salem police arrested five teens in connection with Jones' murder. Brothers Nathaniel Cauthen and Rayshawn Banner , who were 15 and 14 years old at the time of the killing, were sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of first-degree murder.
