STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Staten Island Democratic Party is now throwing its full support behind Queens Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani after previously endorsing former Gov. Andrew Cuomo during the June mayoral primary.

Party Chair Laura LoBianco Sword told the Advance/SILive.com that voters across the five boroughs have made it clear that Mamdani is preferred over Cuomo to succeed Mayor Eric Adams as the next leader of New York City and that it’s the party’s obligation to support him.

“It’s not a matter of us deciding to support [Mamdani], that decision was made by the voters. The Democratic Party has an obligation to support the Democratic nominee,” said Sword. “Once there’s a vote, we’re the Democratic Party, we support the Democrat. Period. End of story.”
