WAILUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Several events are taking place Friday to commemorate the second anniversary of the Maui wildfires.

The tragedy on Aug. 8, 2023, resulted in 102 lives lost, and thousands of homes and businesses destroyed in Lahaina and Upcountry Maui.

Many gathered to honor the memories of loved ones and allow residents to gather and support each other as the community continues to heal.

Nearly a thousand people gathered at Hanakaoo Beach Park in West Maui for a morning paddle-out.

Hundreds came together in the water and on shore, sharing messages of hope, prayers, and reflection.
