BAYSIDE, Queens -- It received more than half a foot of rainfall in about an hour's time, leaving dozens of streets and avenues badly flooded.

Now, residents, businesses, and officials in Bayside are advocating for traffic warning signs for rainstorms and infrastructure improvements to prevent flooding.

The former is a relatively simple change, while the latter is more complicated and much more costly. Whether either will happen is at this point an open question.

The rainstorm on Thursday, July 31, was one of the worst the northern Queens community has ever seen. Its effects are still being felt, even as the neighborhood tries to get back to normal. Emphasizing that point on Friday was Gaspar Carillo, the owner of Cinco de Mayo Bayside Restaurant, on Bell Boulevard.
