A routine traffic stop on U.S. 421 north late Friday afternoon ended with the arrest of one man and the seizure of large quantities of illegal drugs as well as a significant amount of cash.

According to officials with the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened around 5 p.m. when members of the Criminal Interdiction Team conducted a routine traffic stop near Green Path Road for what they called a “motor vehicle violation.”

Capt. Marcus Smith said that during the stop, deputies observed “indicators” of criminal activity and brought in a canine to help with the stop. The dog, he said, gave a positive alert on the vehicle.

A probable cause search of the vehicle was immediately conducted, turning up 96 grams of fentanyl, 201 grams of cocaine, a firearm and a large sum of cash
