CORDOVA, TN. -- Police say a man was able to steal nearly $5,000 from two MLGW customers after intercepting and altering the checks they mailed to pay their utility bills.

Kasie Theus, 29, was charged with theft of property, forgery, and identity theft for allegedly washing the stolen checks, changing the amount, and depositing them into his bank account.

One of the victims who wanted to remain anonymous said a $395 check was mailed to MLGW from a mailbox in the parking lot of the Trinity Common shopping center on North Germantown Parkway in June.

He said he received a copy of the check that showed it had been washed and was made out to Kasie Theus for $2,395. He said Theus deposited the check from a mobile app and even signed the back of the check.
