BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana residents should beware of a new type of scam: bail bonds.

P.R.E.A.C.H. Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge Prison Reform Coalition member, Reverend Alexis Anderson, said scammers target people at a point of fear, but a new scam targets people who claim their loved ones are in jail.

"Somehow these individuals, we don't know who they are, it might be through a data breach, might be through any number of ways, are getting the people who are named as their next of kin, their contacts and calling these people and saying that they can get their loved ones out of jail," said Anderson.

Anderson said misinformation plays a big part, adding that it is important to stick to the real justice system instead of relying on what a scammer may claim.
