NEW ORLEANS — In October, six candidates with different backgrounds and campaign promises will compete for the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s seat.

Sheriff Susan Hutson, former NOPD Chief Michelle Woodfork, Constable Edwin Shorty, former Criminal Court Judge Julian Parker, Ernest Lee, and correctional officer Bob Murray are in the running.

“I’m running for sheriff to instill trust back into this agency,” Woodfork said.

During her decades-long law enforcement career, Woodfork worked her way from NOPD officer to interim chief.

“We brought crime down 25 percent, carjackings down 45 percent, and focused on recruitment and retention,” she said.

Woodfork said the experience she brings to the ballot sets her apart from her competition.
