A dilapidated former veterans shelter in North Charleston has met its demise.
The overgrown and vacant structure at 1905 Burton Lane at the corner of Spruill Avenue and near Military Magnet Academy was demolished in early August.
The outcome follows years of problems with the property that led to its eventual foreclosure.
The site was sold for $5,000 at a July 1 county auction — a seemingly small price for the 9,530-square-foot commercial structure built in 1966 on nearly three-quarters of an acre.
But for the price tag came with a $1.475 million judgment.
The buyer, Jesse Rivera Jr., acquired the property from an estate tied to the founders of a nonprofit that started and ran the shelter, according to county records.
