Sault Ste. Marie Police Service must pay back several million dollars in overspending to the municipality, if there’s a budgetary surplus, as part of a memorandum of understanding between the two groups.

The police department spent nearly $2.5 million more than its budgeted amount last year and is expected to spill up to another $1.9 million in red ink in 2025.

“ Any surpluses incurred by SSMPS will be applied to repay deficits incurred from 2024 onwards that have been funded by the City,” the MOU reads. “Once deficits are recovered by the City, surplus funds will be transferred to the designated Police Reserve.”
