OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Today in 1974, a Nebraska man completed his unorthodox path to the presidency.

Gerald Ford, who was born in Omaha in 1913, became the 38th president after Richard Nixon’s resignation.

Nixon, who remains the only president to resign from office, left after an investigation found that he hired burglars to break into the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate Office Complex.

Ford, who was appointed vice president after Spiro Agnew had to resign amidst a bribery and tax evasion scandal, served 895 days in office.
