Authorities are searching for a suspect following an attack on a Jewish father in Montreal's Parc-Extension neighborhood on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. at Beaumont-De l’Épée park, located at the intersection of de l’Épée and Beaumont avenues.
A video of the assault was shared on social media, showing a man repeatedly punching the victim while a young girl, presumably the victim's daughter, can be heard screaming. The video concludes with the suspect walking away and discarding what appears to be a kippah on the ground near a fountain. Mayer Feig, who posted the video, described the incident as an "unprovoked attack" and claimed that police took over an hour to respond.
According to police spokesperson Manuel Couture, the 32-year-old victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the scene. Couture stated that the investigation is ongoing, but the motive for the attack remains unclear. As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests had been made.
Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante expressed her concern over the incident, calling it a "disturbing" assault. She stated, "I am deeply troubled by the violent and unacceptable attack against a Jewish community leader that occurred yesterday in Villeray—St-Michel—Parc-Extension. My thoughts are with the victim and his loved ones."
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) condemned the attack, emphasizing that such violence must not go unanswered. They stated, "An unprovoked attack on a Jewish father, in front of his own children, must not go unanswered. No more ‘thoughts and prayers.’ Authorities must hold the attacker accountable, and leaders at all levels of government must confront this dangerous escalation."
Quebec’s anti-racism minister, Christopher Skeete, also denounced the attack, stating, "This hatred that is being transferred to people who are different must stop. All Quebecers have the right to live in safety. I look forward to reading that the police have found the attacker and that he will face justice."
The community is on alert as police continue their investigation into this violent incident.
