A pedestrian is hospitalized with serious injuries after being struck by an Eglinton Crosstown LRT train during a test run in Scarborough on Saturday. Toronto police reported the incident occurred near Pharmacy Avenue and Eglinton Avenue East around 1 p.m.
Officers responded to the scene following reports of the collision. The train was conducting a test run for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT at the time of the accident. Paramedics confirmed that a woman was transported to a trauma center with serious injuries that may be life-threatening.
Metrolinx, the provincial transit agency, stated it is collaborating with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and emergency services to investigate the incident. A spokesperson for Metrolinx expressed concern, saying, "Our thoughts are with all impacted by this event and we thank emergency responders for their quick response."
The Eglinton Crosstown LRT project has faced numerous delays over the past decade. Despite the recent transfer of train operations to the TTC in June, the project may not meet its anticipated September opening. Outgoing TTC CEO Greg Percy previously described a September launch as "a reach," suggesting that a fall opening is plausible, with completion by the end of the year.
Investigators are currently on the scene to gather more information about the incident.
