Inspiration struck as Erica Montoya cared for a sick loved one.

Her partner’s grandmother, Flora Quintana, contracted a cold, and she needed to be tested for strep throat, Montoya recalled. But Quintana was bedridden; she couldn’t find a health care provider willing to test her at home.

Montoya, a registered nurse, offered to collect the necessary swab, but she couldn’t find a medical provider to test the sample and interpret the results with Quintana in a video visit.

The experience gave Montoya an idea: “There has to be so many Floras out there in this community that are in that same hole,” she said in an interview.
