One of the Lake Station’s biggest landmarks has disappeared.

The giant hobo statue outside Ruben’s Restaurant was hauled off this week after Luke Family of Brands bought the longtime restaurant at 2230 Ripley St. in Lake Station.

Luke, based in neighboring Hobart, owns the Luke chain of gas stations and convenience stores, LiqGo stores and County Line Orchard, among other businesses. It also owns the longtime Lake Station landmark Johnson’s Fish & Shrimp.

An employee said Ruben's would remain open but be turned into an Arnie’s at the end of the year. The Arnie’s hot dog stand has locations in Munster and Whiting and the slogan “When Man Bites Dog.”
