Bob Miller, the race’s director, expected as much. Before the participants set out, Miller instructed the men to follow Jack if they had any confusion about the watercourse layout.

The event, in its 15th year, combines paddling, bicycling, and running — essentially a triathlon with boats and mountain bikes. Participants paddled in well-worn canoes and gleaming thousand-dollar kayaks alike.
