A spike in retail thefts across St. Thomas has prompted the city’s police department to respond with a push aimed at deterring shoplifting.

Project Carts and Robbers – an operation launched by St. Thomas police – took place over four separate days in July at 1063 Talbot St., a commercial complex with the highest number of reported thefts and shoplifting incidents in the city, St. Thomas police spokesperson Samantha Wakefield said.

She described “consistent reports about losses, safety concerns for staff and disruptions to daily operations” at that address. She added: “Theft won’t be tolerated in St. Thomas.”

The results of the push included 17 criminal charges, the recovery of a $16,000 stolen vehicle, the seizure of about $100 in recovered merchandise and one gram of fentanyl.
