A long-stalled plan to build a multimillion-dollar indoor sports complex at Johnson Park has been suspended by city officials, marking the latest twist in a nearly decade-old project that has seen its estimated cost skyrocket from $7 million to more than $40 million.

The Hackensack City Council voted unanimously on Monday to suspend its contract with APS Contracting, Inc., effectively pulling the plug on a project first approved in 2016 but never physically started.

Officials cited cost overruns, lack of community benefit, and resident backlash as key reasons for the decision.

Mayor Caseen Gaines has described the project as costly and ill-fated from the start, saying it no longer made financial sense in a city facing rising taxes and living costs.
