A fire at an east Hamilton waste transfer facility caused around $250,000 in damages early Sunday.

Hamilton firefighters responded to the garbage depot at 375 Gage Ave. N., between Gertrude and Burlington streets, around 4:30 a.m. for reports of a structure fire.

The call was upgraded to a multiple-alarm blaze after first arriving crews were met with multiple fully engulfed “bays of waste contents,” fire Deputy Chief Mike Rember said in a news release.

Rember said crews fought the fire from a defensive position, using several aerial ladders to douse the bays from overhead and protect adjacent properties, including an office and a mechanic shop.

It took almost two hours just to get the blaze under control.
