A recent poll indicates that Prime Minister Mark Carney's popularity is declining, although it remains generally favorable. According to Abacus Data, the approval rating for Carney's Liberal government has fallen to 50 percent, a decrease of two percentage points since mid-July. This marks the lowest approval level since March.

The survey was conducted in the week following U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of new 35 percent tariffs on Canada. This move appears to be a result of the failure to reach a new trade agreement by the August 1 deadline.

Despite the slight dip in approval, Carney continues to hold a positive net approval rating. Abacus CEO David Coletto noted that the decline in popularity may be linked to a perceived lack of progress on significant domestic issues and ongoing high-profile international negotiations.

While the Liberals have experienced a modest decrease in support, Abacus Data reports that overall political preferences among Canadians have remained relatively stable throughout the summer.
