City officials last month announced a series of parties to celebrate recent progress on improving State Route 347, the city’s only direct route to the rest of metro Phoenix. This weekend, the first two events drew large crowds.

On Saturday, families gathered at Copper Sky Regional Park for the first two of three 347 Celebration Party Lanes. It’s a play on the highway’s impending expansion to three lanes .

Inside the gymnasium, children bounced in a car-shaped inflatable, raced inside giant Zorb balls and enjoyed other attractions. Hot Wheels races took place, and free hot dogs and chips were served.

Outside at the aquatic center, the pool was full, with free admission adding to the draw. Kids and adults alike splashed around in the summer heat.

The celebration will continue Aug.
