LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - A 25-year-old Laredo woman has been sentenced for conspiracy to transport for trying to bring a 3-year-old boy into the United States.

Law enforcement first encountered Salma Galilea Veliz at the Juarez-Lincoln International Bridge on November 14, 2024.

She claimed that the 3-year-old boy was her son and showed a Texas birth certificate.

She later admitted that he was not her son and that someone paid her to smuggle him into the United States.

The jury deliberated for about 45 minutes before finding Veliz guilty following a two-day trial.

Veliz will serve three years in federal prison followed by two years of supervised release.
