Calgarians opposed to Alberta separating from Canada lined up along a Kensington block Sunday to sign a petition as part of the Alberta Forever Canada citizen initiative.

The campaign, spearheaded by former Progressive Conservative deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk, aims to collect nearly 300,000 signatures by Oct. 28 to force a referendum asking whether Alberta should remain in Canada.

It launched in Edmonton on Aug. 2 under older legislation that gives campaigns 90 days to collect signatures from 20 per cent of the province’s electorate.
