NEWAYGO, Mich. — The first day of school is coming up in just a couple of weeks, but for one Newaygo County family, this school year comes with some new challenges.

Addie Miller, 13, has been struggling with chronic kidney disease her entire life, stemming from complications at birth. But now, as she gears up to enter her last year of middle school, her condition has worsened, and she needs a kidney transplant.

“I'm nervous,” Ashley Miller, Addie’s mother, said. “I'm excited because we have been waiting a long time for this. We didn't know when it was coming, and it's just gonna be hard in the beginning.”

Ashley has been with her daughter every step of the way, including bringing her to what feels like countless tests just to get her on the transplant list.
