WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina — A longtime popular race-car driver died Saturday when he reportedly had a heart attack during an event, causing him to crash his car.

Robbie Brewer, 53, was racing at Bowman Gray Stadium when the crash occurred, according to floracing.com . There were four laps left in the race when Brewer’s car crashed into the wall on Turn 4, WXII Channel 4 reports .

WXII reports that rescuers had to peel back the top of the vehicle in order to remove Brewer.

He was racing in the Sportsman Division and was in fourth place when the crash occurred, reports say.

“We are saddened by the passing of Robbie Brewer after he was transported to an area medical facility following an on-track medical incident during last night’s event at Bowman Gray Stadium,” said a statement
