We often see downed trees, debris and plenty of cleanup to do in the aftermath of storms and flooding, but it’s what you don’t see that can be just as dangerous.

The National Weather Service says floodwaters often become contaminated with sewage or chemicals.

Gas leaks and live power lines can be deadly but aren’t obvious at first glance.

After a flood, make sure water is safe to drink, cook or clean with. Authorities may ask you to boil water for a while after a flood.

Also, carbon monoxide is one of the leading causes of death after storms when areas are dealing with power outages. Never use a portable generator inside your home or garage.
