Reader: I have worked with the same manager for almost 20 years, first as colleagues and now as her direct report. A younger female colleague working at the same company joined our department a few years ago. We all get along and work well together.

My employer has a large annual conference, with opportunities to network with customers and colleagues. No one at my level in our department is allowed to attend, but people at my level in other departments can.
