NORMAN — OU quarterback John Mateer and running back Jaydn Ott are more than teammates. They’re also neighbors now that Ott, a spring transfer from California-Berkeley, is firmly settled in Oklahoma.

Sometimes, it’s just the American way for neighbors to compete. “Jim” tries to keep his grass greener and flowerbeds cleaner than “Jeff” across the street. Jeff wants the whole world to know that his barbeque smoker is bigger and better than Jim’s.

For John and Jaydn, though, the battles in the front yard consist of something a little more childlike. Two weeks before OU finished summer workouts, Ott challenged Mateer to a nightly jump rope competition, whereby they resolved to see who could get through 1,000 turns faster.
