MOUNT PLEASANT — The minute he sees Spencer, 2-year-old Justice Syas lets out a loud squeal and reaches for him with both arms. Spencer is a 125-pound Great Pyrenees who resembles a fluffy white cloud that grew legs and a head and then descended to Earth.

As Justice hops down from his brother’s arm to toddle over to the giant dog, Spencer also stands up and moves eagerly toward him. Justice runs up to him and receives a big wet-nose kiss, which sends him squealing in the opposite direction. Then Justice looks up at his mother, Raynique Syas, and lets off a stream of what sounds like babbling to the untrained ear. But his mother gets it.

No, she informed him. “You cannot take Spencer home.”
