LINCOLN, Neb. (WJW) -- Hundreds of inmates at the Nebraska State Penitentiary had to be relocated over the weekend after severe weather ripped the roof off two housing units.
Dramatic video shared by the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) showed a massive amount of debris crashing to the ground and being blown through the prison yard around 5:15 a.m. Saturday as severe weather rolled through the area.
The National Weather Service in Omaha had previously warned of possible 80 mph wind gusts and possible pea-sized hail.
According to the NDCS, the storm impacted two "dormitory-style" units where 387 inmates were being housed. Staff moved 250 of the inmates to the gym and other available housing units at the prison.
The remaining 137 inmates were moved to the Omaha Correct
