East Sandwich resident Katherine “Kate” DiMascolo is running the Falmouth Road Race on August 17 in honor of her mother Mary Chimi while raising funds for the New England Donor Service.
In 2015, Dimascolo donated most of her liver to Chimi, who battled with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis or NASH.
“We were told that she would need a liver transplant, and the list was just too long, and they told her that her best case scenario would be a living donor,” she said.
Despite recently having her third child, DiMascolo volunteered herself as a donor, only to be told by doctors that she would need to wait at least a year before being able to do so.
“So I accepted that as an answer and then over the next few months, I almost lost my mom multiple times. And then I was like I can fix that,” she said
