A man is fighting for his life after being brutally attacked on a bustling city centre street.

Officers attended Deansgate following reports that a man had been assaulted near to the junction with Atkinson Street at around 11.10pm on Saturday night (August 9).

Greater Manchester Police says it is believed an altercation had taken place prior to the incident, which left the victim critically injured.

He was taken to hospital for treatment, where he remains in a critical condition this afternoon (Monday, August 11).

Two men, aged 23 and 33, were arrested on suspicion of assault.

The 23-year-old remains in custody while the 33-year-old has since been bailed pending further enquiri
