CHIPPEWA COUNTY, MI -- The remains of a young girl have been moved to a traditional burial ground after they were found at the site of a former casino in the Upper Peninsula.

Bay Mills Tribal Chairperson Whitney Gravelle announced the news on social media las week, revealing the girl’s name is Anna Waishkey.

Her remains were found as crews were clearing the site of the former Kings Club Casino on the Bay Mills Indian Community in Chippewa County.

Paula Carrick, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer and Cultural Director Allyn Cameron oversaw the removal of the remains, which was done with “ceremony, good intentions, and traditional medicines.” She was taken to the community’s Old Burial Ground, where she will be reunited with her family and ancestors.
