The biggest meteor shower of the year reaches its peak this week, bringing up to 50 'shooting stars' an hour to UK skies.

The annual Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak on Tuesday night and into Wednesday (August 12-13).

The Perseids are one of the brightest and most active meteor showers of the year, but skywatchers hoping for a summer spectacle may be left disappointed this year thanks to the Moon.

The warm glow of August's Sturgeon Moon dazzled in skies all over the world this weekend. This year's Perseids peak therefore falls three days after a full Moon , with Tuesday night's 88 per cent illuminated waning gibbous Moon will bring significant light pollution to the night sky.
