ATLANTIC CITY — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has taken over the city's housing authority after determining the local agency cannot overcome the many issues that have plagued it over the years.

Tom Sahlin, the authority's executive director, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

HUD sent a letter to the Housing Authority on July 22 declaring it in substantial default, U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-2nd, said in a news release at the time.
