COLUMBIA, S.C. — A South Carolina Republican Senator has announced his resignation after receiving a medical diagnosis.

Sen. Roger Nutt, of Spartanburg, released a letter announcing his resignation Monday afternoon, August 11. In it, Nutt said he had sought care for what he and his family believed to be symptoms from long-Covid. Instead, his doctors determined Nutt has Alzheimer's disease.

Nutt was elected to District 12 covering Spartanburg and Greenville counties in 2024 after serving in the House of Representatives from 2021-2024. As a senator, he served on the Education, Judiciary, Family and Veterans' Services, Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the Fish, Game and Forestry committees.
