TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WSAV) — The Tybee Island Police Department (TIPD) recovered a stolen handgun in an arrest that stemmed from a traffic stop Sunday, it said in its weekly recap.
In the public information release, TIPD said an officer stopped a vehicle that was traveling the wrong way down a one-way street. The officer said there was a smell of marijuana from the vehicle and reported the sight of two open beer cans.
The vehicle was searched based on probable cause, where a handgun was discovered. After checking the serial number, the officer learned it had been stolen.
The driver was placed under arrest and charged with theft by receiving (felony).
