VERONA BEACH STATE PARK, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- Monday's summer heat had many people heading to the water to cool off. But some popular spots in Central New York are closed or have posted warnings not to swim because of a harmful algal bloom.
At Verona Beach State Park, the sand is quiet, and the swimming is off limits due to a harmful algal bloom.
"This is the first year that it's happened the week that we've camped. They said just because it's so hot, the heat and they can't control it, and we understand that, but it's kind of a let down because you plan a beach vacation to come play at the beach and you don't have the beach," said Beth Utano.
Utano and her family arrived on Sunday, only to find out the swimming advisory was still in effect.
"They were good about posting on their Facebook
