WASHINGTON — Following President Donald Trump's announcement to federalize DC's police department and deploy the National Guard on Monday, many politicians are fighting back.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) announced that they will reintroduce legislation to grant the District full control over its National Guard unit and the Metropolitan Police Department when Congress reconvenes in September.

Trump has officially assumed control of D.C.'s police department and announced plans to deploy the National Guard at a White House press briefing Monday, an action he took without consulting D.C. government officials according to the city's mayor.
